Around Vancouver Island

Starting out from Seattle, Serenade and various friends and family
circumnavigated Vancouver Island following the usual
counterclockwise route in early Summer 2005. We had great
winds throughout the trip, virtually no fog (which is a problem in
August), and mostly good weather.
We actually sailed about 25 days to and from
Seattle, and lingered in Barkely Sound for a week. Barkely
Sound and the Broken Group were really the high point of the trip, with the greatest
abundance of marine life, wonderful beaches, and surprisingly warm
water that was great for swimming.

Nanaimo, BC. Probably the
best stop north of Victoria for supplies. |

The most heavily visited business establishment in Campbell River. |

 |
Giant barges removing the last stands of old growth.
We noticed that south of the Brooks Peninsula
logging was much more obvious with clearcuts extending down to the
shoreline.
North of the peninsula was not as heavily logged,
perhaps due to remoteness. |

I

Serenade at Hot Springs Cove.
We managed to gently run aground here while totally distracted by
the lure of hot springs. |
 |
Hot Springs Cove. Quite
primitive natural hot springs with only room for a dozen close
friends.
Float planes and tourist boats bring way too many
visitors mid-day, so plan your arrival early or late in the day.
