Around Vancouver Island

May 12  to
July 4, 2005

Starting out from Seattle, Serenade and various friends and family circumnavigated Vancouver Island following the usual counterclockwise route in early Summer 2005.  We had great winds throughout the trip, virtually no fog (which is a problem in August), and mostly good weather.

We actually sailed about 25 days to and from Seattle, and lingered in Barkely Sound for a week.  Barkely Sound and the Broken Group were really the high point of the trip, with the greatest abundance of marine life, wonderful beaches, and surprisingly warm water that was great for swimming.

For other great descriptions of this route, see:

Nanaimo, BC.

Probably the best stop north of Victoria for supplies.

Seals in Comox harbour.
Fishing boats in Comox harbour.

The most heavily visited business establishment in Campbell River.
Giant barges removing the last stands of old growth.

We noticed that south of the Brooks Peninsula logging was much more obvious with clearcuts extending down to the shoreline.

North of the peninsula was not as heavily logged, perhaps due to remoteness.

Napping at Port Neville.
Deer at sea.
Entering Chatham Channel.
My niece Jane GF who joined the trip from Campbell River to Port McNeill.
  Tent pole carving.
A beach comprised  of clam and oyster shells.
Barnacles.
Serenade in
Bull Harbour.
Larry Hall joined the cruise from Port McNeil to Bamfield.

I managed to get seasick for the 3rd time in my life going around Cape Scott and Larry pulled us through.

Winter Harbor.
The aptly named Uchuck III in Walters Cove.

This vessel provides ferry and delivery service along the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Walters Cove at dusk.
Tahsis Narrows.
Stained glass in the Catholic church at Friendly Cove.

Note the First Peoples in shadow at the lower left quietly enjoying the arrival of the brightly illuminated Spanish explorers bringing with them the joys of western culture.

Graveyard at Friendly Cove.
Fallen Totem at Friendly Cove.
Fallen Totem at Friendly Cove.
Serenade at Hot Springs Cove.

We managed to gently run aground here while totally distracted by the lure of hot springs.

Hot Springs Cove.

Quite primitive natural hot springs with only room for a dozen close friends.

Float planes and tourist boats bring way too many visitors mid-day, so plan your arrival early or late in the day.

Art in Ucluelet.
Effingham Bay.

ML fishing, but no fish.

Effingham Island.

Xannie and Peno.

JM
The water temperature in Barkely sound was unbelievably warm.

A humpback which moments later came alongside and was inches away from the bow.
Xannie and Peno calling the whale.

"Come back, Mr. Whale, come back, Mrs. Whale"

It worked!

ML eagerly awaiting the Straight of Juan de Fuca.
